Charming and cheerful, these colorful necklaces are handmade from vintage glass cabochons originally created in Japan to imitate carved jade. During WWII, many glass factories were destroyed in Japan. After the war ended, several glass companies taught the devastated and unemployed citizens how to blow and press colored glass for beads and cabochons out of their own homes. Entire neighborhoods took part in the manufacturing of the jade-inspired glass, and the beautiful exports helped lift Japan's economy. Artist Nina Gibson was drawn to the Japanese floral motifs of the era and collected the glass to create her own line of jewelry. "Japonica and Japanese design were so popular in America in the years following the war," Nina said.
