Originally referred as the Jembe (djembe is the French spelling) is a portable drum using a skin membrane woven tight on a cylindrical-like body. This portable conga-type instrument is believed to have originated about 2,000 years ago and was indigenous to the Guinea region in West Africa. When the French arrived, they added the D to the world Jembe and, thus, the drum is referred as Djembe. Relatively compact, at about 15 to 24 high, this drum became popular in the 1950's as a core percussive instrument of non-hispanic international music. Usually played on your lap or upright, between legs, the djembe is capable of producing a wide range of tones from high-pitch to deep bass.The Djembe is often associated with the Dumbek. Arabian in origin, the Dumbek is commonly found in Turkey, the Balkan countries, and North Africa. The name is an approximation of the two basic sounds the drum makes - Dum (the bass tone) and Bek (the high-pitched crack from the edge of the drum). The percussive membrane is usually made of fish-skin, goat-skin or plastic. The body may be ceramic, metal, or fiberglass composite.
