I have a friend (I know shocking) that I met in college and who throughout the years, and distance have remained close to. After graduation, we moved across the country from one another with Kyle settling in New York. Along with all his other quirks, he developed a love for the New York Yankees. This alone, would not have been too much of a problem if I had not ended up right smack in the center of Mariner territory!

Over the years, I have visited Kyle and he has visited me and on many of these visits we have timed them to take in a ball game. We watched these two teams play other teams and had the fun (?) of watching them play each other. And, granted, over the years, Kyle has certainly had more crowing rights than I have!

But, I was SURE this was going to be the Mariners year! They broke record after record after record! They were a joy to watch and we never had more calls asking if we wanted to get rid of ANY of our tickets (we are season holders) which we hung onto each and every one!

I was truly enjoying the season as I constantly emailed Kyle with updates and Mariner sports clippings! It was great............ while it lasted!

Suddenly, it was Kyle's turn :0( and I was getting the updates and sports clippings! You know, I liked sending them a lot more than receiving them!

But now I (and my Mariners) must move on and to do so, I had to accept the Yankees win AND the fact that Kyles birthday was in 8 days.

And I knew what I had to buy and went to find it. I needed a New York Yankees hat to add to my gift. I did not want to buy it, I did not want to shop for it and I did not even want to touch it! So, I knew I would have to buy it online and have it mailed directly to Kyle. Besides, I didn’t even know if I could find one around here or if I did, I was sure a big spotlight would fall on me and bells and whistles would ring as I walked out of the store. Since I did not wish that to happen, I started looking online.

We buy a lot of hats at the mall from Lids which I soon found out has an online store, HatWorld.com. Just like the stores at the Malls, they sell baseball style hats with just about any team or brand logo you can think of on them.

When you first get to HatWorld.com you pick from the follow choices:

Once there, I picked MLB where I was taken to Major Baseballs home page. I then went to the drop down bar, went right past Mariners (sorry guys) and clicked on New York Yankees.

This took me to another pages where I was shown 25 matches. The hats ranged in price from $14.99 to $24.99 (with one at $27.99), visors were $16.99 and a headband was $4.99.

They also showed a cap rack ($19.99), stain and water repellent $5.99), a holder to form your hat ($4.99) and one to put it in when you wash it for $3.99. I skipped those things and started looking through the hats.

The first thing I noticed was the old stupid black one that Kyle was glued to his head (probably still wears it when he’s in a suit) or as HatWorld.com refers to it 040605 New York Yankees New Era 5959 Fitted Denim Black Denim w/Red for 24.99. I knew I didn’t want to see that hat for another decade so I looked forward.

Now, not being a big Yankee hat fan, I am not sure who would buy which one of these hats! I can tell you they come in white (now that must be a big seller with Mom’s), red, gray, navy, off white and denim. You can get some of them fitted by headsize, some by S.M,L and XL and then some are the adjustable type.

This information actually did help me narrow it down as I knew he wouldn’t want the red, white, off white or denim colors and that he would rather die than wear an adjustable hat and that I would have to go with an actual size and not a generic medium. So, with those hats eliminated I was down to ~~

Well, I was NOT going to buy the 2001 world series one world series patch on the left side! I mean, a girl can only be so nice! So, as luck would have it, the New Era "On Field Flag" hat was available in a 7 1/8 size so I choose it.

The shipping and handling was $4.99 making the total come to $29.98.

They are running an online special where you get your second hat for 1/2 price so I went ahead and added an Arizonia Diamonback’s toddler hat for his 2 year old son! I knew he was would love it as he’s such a smart kid!

The toddler hat was $14.99, they took off $7.50 for the discount and the shipping remained at $4.99 so the total came to $37.47. Standard shipping is free for orders of 3 items or more.

I had the option of choosing Airborn Express 2nd day air for $9.99 or Airborn Express Next Day Air for $19.99. Standard shipping is free for orders over $50.00 with them same charges for shipping upgrades for all orders.

Checkout was on a secured site and had all the standard fill-ins. You have the option of keeping your information on file to speed things up on your next visit.

I was able to send the hats to Kyle’s house without a problem and then using the sites online tracking, follow the package there.

It arrived this morning and I contacted Becky (Kyle’s wife) to make sure she intercepted first. On Saturday night, at his party, she is going to tape it and sent me a copy. I am not as concerned as to watching him open his hat as I am to watch him when Becky brings out the baby in his Arizonia Diamonback hat! Ah, how I wish I could see that reaction in person!
