Dining Table Has Poor Finish; Rug Backing Breaking Down

A review by hmmmmzzzz written on Jun 4, 2009
Full review
I bought a Bordeaux dining table with the mahogany stain.  It is sturdy, but the quality of the top finish is the worst I have ever seen.  I don't know how so many "steps" could result in this paper-thin finish.  With normal use, it started peeling off within a year.  Also, a damp vase placed on the seam caused the particle board to expand and now there is a mound in the middle of the table.  I paid way too much for a table that has to have a tablecloth.  All the time.  It should have come with a warning: "Not intended for normal daily use.  Cover constantly for best results."  If you don't want the hassle of constantly covering it, I recommend ordering a knock-off for less money and better quality.  Also, one of the opaque finishes may be more durable.

Then, our 8 x 10 wool rug started smelling like burnt rubber after 2 or 3 years.  I thought it was a belt on the housecleaners' vacuum causing the smell.  The carpet cleaner I hired said Pottery Barn saves money by using rubber in the rug construction for cheap bulk.  After a few years it breaks down and starts to offgass.  The rug is now molding in my garage while I figure out how to dispose of it.  I mentioned it casually to a salesperson, and she looked at me like I was insane.

Pottery Barn Products that have been great:  I have a set of the Emma dinnerware that seems fragile, but has held up great with no chips for 4 months.  Microwavable and dishwashable.  Ottomons have also held up well.  The mahogany chair finish is durable, I am guessing because it is solid wood and not a sheer-finish veneer.
