I recently received the Diamond Back Humidor Combo from Thompson Cigar. It arrived via UPS on the tenth business day, followed by the cigars via USPS the next day (it seemed to be two or three days too long shipping from Florida). Here is a list of my opinions regarding the items and service:
The humidor is of fairly cheap construction, looks very nice and shiny from across the room but the inlaid woods on top are full of putty and sanding marks (a lovely design, however) the cedar inside is made with about as much care and tolerances as an average cabinet selection box would be; more putty and crooked edges.
The hardware on the humidor is very cheap. The keyhole (a little piece of brass-colored pot metal, just like the hinges, keys etc.) fell off as I removed the bubble wrap due to both screws having stripped the wood they were anchored in. A little more wood putty fixed that problem.
The lock and it's upper catch were installed off-center; which caused one key to break on my first attempt at locking it. I removed the lock and bent the tongue to one side which makes it "kind of work a little". The hygrometer is so crummy it could have come in a Happy Meal, and the humidifier is one of those pieces of green floral foam in a black plastic box- but it seems to work.
The cigars vary between orders and opinions on tobacco are subjective so I'll just say that the three types of cigars I received were pretty good, and about what I expected. A couple were cracked and a few had small holes in the wrapper (so far).
They sent me 25 each of:
St. George Corona
Flor de Dominguez Churchill
Indepencia 1898 Corona (My favorite of the three)
My order status on the website never progressed past "In Process" but I did get a confirmation email immediately after placing my order. Two days later I called customer service and spoke with a very nice woman in India reading from a script who confirmed my order had shipped that day. Three days after that I received a voicemail from someone sounding distinctly not Indian telling me that tobacco products would be shipped to my home.
To summarize; I would recommend buying a humidor combo and not much else from Thompson- and don't expect a lovely piece of cabinetry when you pick out your humidor- although with all the cigars it came with and free shipping it was a good deal.
One place I do plan on ordering from in the future is the "TCC Auctions" section of their website, as some of the deals seem to be pretty good- although I'll check at Cigars International first.
