Product Description

Sula and Nel grow up together in "the Bottom," but when they become adults, their paths diverge. Sula leaves to explore the world, Nel settles down to a quiet life. When they are reunited, the differences between them become apparent--as do, in the end, the similarities. Morrison's novel evokes not only two unique women, but the entire culture of a small Ohio town. In 1973, it was nominated for a National Book Award.

Sula: A Complex, Engrossing Read

Date of Review:  Oct 6, 2000
Review: I was introduced to Sula by Toni Morrison by an ex-boyfriend. He was so intrigued by the subject matter that he offered to let me borrow his copy of the book; we discussed it during our first date. That man is gone, but the book remains.

Seductress Sula stars in great Morrison novel

Date of Review:  Dec 29, 2001
The Bottom Line: Toni Morrison's Sula is an equally beautiful and disturbing tale of a town and its inhabitants. Two girls, Nel and Sula, deal with growing up, family, romantic love and betrayal.
Review: In that place, where they tore the nightshade and blackberry patches from their roots to make room for the Medallion City Golf Course, there was once a neighborhood. It stood in the hills above the valley town of Medallion and spread all the way to...

The Bottom Line: All of Toni Morrison's books are masterpieces and all can be read on many levels. "Sula" is no exception.
Review: I think Toni Morrison is America's greatest living author. Perhaps she is the greatest living woman author. Surely she is in the top three. Although "Sula" isn't my favorite Morrison work, I think it is one of Morrison's most complicated and one of...

Paperback, Sula
Two girls who grow up to become women. Two friends who become something worse than enemies. In this brilliantly imagined novel, Toni Morrison tells the story of Nel Wright and Sula Peace, who meet as children in the small town of Medallion, Ohio. Their devotion is fierce enough to withstand bullies and the burden of a dreadful secret. It endures even after Nel has grown up to be a pillar of the black community and Sula has become a pariah. But their friendship ends in an unforgivable betrayal-or does it end? Terrifying, comic, ribald and tragic, Sula is a work that overflows with life.
