Trisha McFarland, a 9-year-old Red Sox fan, accidentally gets separated from her mother and brother while hiking on the Appalachian Trail. As she wanders the wilderness trying to find her way back, her only companions are the baseball games that she hears on her Walkman and, with her batteries running low and her paranoia running high, a hallucination of Red Sox pitcher Tom Gordon.

The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon, by Stephen King

Date of Review:  May 10, 2003
The Bottom Line: This is an almost completely re-written re-post of my original Tom Gordon epinion.
Review: I believe success depends just as much on knowing what to present to the world as it does on knowing what to hold back, and in the case of The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon, King shoulda known better. On the other hand, with the incredibly thin plot of...

Review: The one thing Stephen King is seldom recognized for is his ability to be a story teller. Granted, he writes tomes and tomes of work; hefty volumes full of dark creatures and surreal situations. On the other hand, as in Green Mile, Stephen King also...

The Girl Who Got Lost in the Woods

Date of Review:  Oct 21, 2004
The Bottom Line: Good book, very short but it has to be, parts not believable, good plot
Review: This is the first Stephen King book I have ever read. I have been reading James Patterson books, but once I read all of those I turned to King. I tried to read his Dreamcatcher after seeing the movie but I just couldn t get into it.

I...

Professional Reviews

Entertainment Weekly: "[King is] an elegant writer and a master of pacing. Here he's at his best when he keeps the creepy elements to a minimum and concentrates on the girl-against-nature tale....THE GIRL WHO LOVED TOM GORDON isn't going to keep die-hard horror fans up at night, but adventure addicts will find plenty of thrills."

First Line

The world had teeth and it could bite you with them anytime it wanted. Trisha McFarland discovered this when she was nine years old. At ten o'clock on a morning in early June she was sitting in the back of her mother's Dodge Caravan, wearing her blue Red Sox batting practice jersey (the one with 36 GORDON on the back) and playing with Mona, her doll. At ten thirty she was lost in the woods. By eleven she was trying not to be terrified, trying not to let herself think, "This is serious, this is very serious." Trying not to think that sometimes when people got lost in the woods they got seriously hurt. Sometimes they died.
