Redesigned in 1997 for the addition of Fords Triton engines, the Econoline offers a choice of 4.2 liter V-6, 4.6 liter and 5.4 liter V-8s and a monster 6.8 L V-10. All but the V-6 are advanced single overhead camshaft designs. The 4.6 has 215 hp, the 5.4 L has 235 hp and the V-10 a whopping 265 horsepower. Although its rated at 200 hp, avoid the V-6 if youre going to be hauling a significant load or pulling a trailer. Theres also a 215 hp 7.3 liter diesel. Towing capacity ranges from low of 3,700 pounds for the 4.2 L V-6 to a high of 10,000 pounds for the V-10 and diesel. Econolines are available as both cargo vans and club wagons with seating for up to 15 passengers. New for 1998 is standard air conditioning. Airbags and anti lock brakes are standard.

Does NOT make a good commercial work van!

Pros: Always starts, good power, quiet ride, good gas mileage, nice paint finish, decent cargo capacity.
Cons: WORTHLESS SUSPENSION! Tears up front tires and ball joints, dog tracks, outdated styling, cheap controls
The Bottom Line: While the E-250 may be reliable the suspension makes it useless as a service van.

Review: I'm a commercial/Industrial HVAC service tech. The company I work for has quite a few Ford E-250 vans ranging from 1994 to 2001. I've driven all including the '98's, however my personal company vehicle is a '96. All vans are nearly identical.

1998 Econoline 150

Pros: Strong Body, Large Cargo Capacity, Strong "Attitude" when Towing, Automatic Transmission is Shiftable, Reliable.
Cons: Pulsating Power Steering Pump, Sometimes Engine Races, Loose Body.
