First published in 1977, LORD FOUL'S BANE is the initial volume in a classic epic fantasy trilogy that became part of a larger series, The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant the Unbeliever. Thomas Covenant is an embittered man whose Hansen's disease (leprosy) led both to the breakup of his marriage and to his treatment as a pariah by his small town. When he's hit by a police car, Covenant is magically transported to the Land, a beautiful, verdant country where his leprosy is cured. The Land is threatened with destruction by a demonic being, Lord Foul the Despiser. Covenant's gangrene-damaged hand identifies him with a legendary half-handed hero of the Land, and his white gold wedding ring is a potent magical weapon against Lord Foul. Covenant is fated either to be either the promised savior of the Land--or its destroyer. However, despite the powerful evidence of his senses, Covenant is not convinced that the Land actually exists. Stephen R. Donaldson was one of the first contemporary fantasy writers to utilize a

The quintessential "adult" fantasy novel.

by  slarter ,  Nov 23, 2004
92 out of 92 people found this review helpful.
Pros: Phenomenal characterization, bold choice of protagonists, unique perspective, and excellent prose...
Cons: ... but quite a few sentences beginning with conjunctions.
The Bottom Line: Adult, sophisticated, and intellectual, the first novel in The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant the Unbeliever should not be missed.
This reviewer recommends this product.
Review: There are very few fantasy novels that can claim a more "adult" audience than is normal for the genre. This is most certainly true of the 1970s, when the aftereffects of The Lord of the Rings could still be felt (despite its current...

Review: I have recommended Lord Foul s Bane and its many sequels to many people. Here is a book that excels both in its drawing of individual characters, entire cultures, and the physical environs of a fictional world. I thought I ought to finally get...

A dark fantasy saga is launched

by  dolphinboy ,  Oct 15, 2006
44 out of 44 people found this review helpful.
Pros: Complex writing, an interesting anti-hero, fascinating supporting characters.
Cons: Weak names for some characters and places.
The Bottom Line: If you are a patient reader and you can tolerate an abrasive curmudgeon of an anti-hero, this is a great fantasy saga.
This reviewer recommends this product.
Review: Opening comment: I've read this book, and this series, three times, over a span of twenty-some years from the first time to the most recent. When I first read it, I liked the characters, images, and story, but the language seemed deliberately...
