Manufacturer: Gathering of Developers
Max Payne, the New York police detective, has had a bad time of it recently, and it's time for payback. Three years ago, junkies high on a mysterious new narcotic called Valkyr slaughtered his wife and child. The tragedy drives him on a prolonged path of vengeance. It turns him from a detective looking for easy work to a deep undercover vice cop infiltrating the Mob to a hardened vigilante. Max Payne is a film-noir-inspired game about revenge that is unflinching in every way possible. It's dark and moody, extremely twisted, and turns PC action gaming on its ear by featuring state-of-the-art graphics, audio, and cinematic action. Aside from its inspired use of photorealistic graphics and unique graphic novel (comic book) panels to further the plot, the game also features something called Bullet Time: a slow-motion toggle, usable for a limited time, that re-creates the awe-inspiring diving maneuvers made popular by director John Woo and, of course, The Matrix . At the touch of a button, Max can g

Max Payne - Matrix-like crime-fighting

by  t13monkeys ,  Aug 1, 2001

Pros: Awesome new graphics engine, photo-textured, bullet damage, matrix effect.
Cons: crappy ending, annoying dream sequences, tedious enemies, and stupid difficulty setting.
The Bottom Line: Although flawed, Max Payne offers some new gameplay to an overplayed 3d-shooter genre, and some amazing new graphics/slow motion/and level design.
This reviewer recommends this product.
Review: Max Payne is so-far the most innovative 3d-shooter yet. Developed by Remedy and released by God Games and 3d Realms, this game pushes the limits in today?s standard 3d-shooter. It features crystal sharp graphics, movie like in-game cinematics, and...

Pros: Bullet time is pretty nifty.
Cons: Really odd "hits", clipping is almost nonexistant.
The Bottom Line: If you can get past Max trying to be Bruce Willis, you'll really dig this game.

Review: Max Payne. I'd almost forgotten how long ago this game had been talked about before it finally got over its stage fright and decided to get itself out onto shelves.

All of the initial signs on this game had it earmarked to be another...

Boy, was I wrong...

Pros: Non-stop action. Well executed Bullet Time gameplay. Superb voice acting.
Cons: Pretty short and no multiplayer.
The Bottom Line: 3+ years of waiting...and it was totally worth it.
This reviewer recommends this product.
Review: Ok, I admit it. I though Max Payne would be a bust. In fact, I was so certain of it that I prophesied Max Payne would be the Daikatana of 2001. Humbled, I now shamefacedly struggle to remove my foot from my mouth.

In my defense, the...
