Product Description

Cross LA BOHHME with CABARET, throw in a little bit of RENT, and you might almost begin to describe Baz Luhrmann's visually opulent, fast-paced, funny, heartrending MOULIN ROUGE. The film, which premiered as the opener to the 2001 Cannes Film Festival, is a musical set in 1899 Paris at the notorious Montmartre cabaret club, the Moulin Rouge. Directed by Luhrmann (WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE'S ROMEO AND JULIET, STRICTLY BALLROOM), the movie stars Nicole Kidman as the high-kicking courtesan, Satine; Ewan McGregor as the sensitive poet, Christian; and John Leguizamo as the flamboyant artist and matchmaker, Toulouse-Lautrec. Luhrmann's use of eclectic lighting and saturated color, the fast zooms and quick cuts of his camera, and his magnificent costumes and sets perfectly capture the excess and freneticism for which the Moulin Rouge was famous. Beautifully led by McGregor and Kidman, the flawless supporting cast brings to life the culture of belle ipoque Paris with magical realism. Above all, the anachronistic, ener...

Sex, Lust, Love, and Paris-The Moulin Rouge

Date of Review:  Jun 10, 2001
The Bottom Line: I found it to be an enjoyable fantasy/romance with wonderful cinematography, acting, story line and music.
Review: It has been a long time since I have been so wonderfully surprised by a movie. Of course, I had to go see it since it took place in my favorite city in the world!! While recently in Paris, we stopped to take a photo opportunity in front of the...

Ewan McGregor Is Prince Charming in Moulin Rouge

Date of Review:  Jun 1, 2001
The Bottom Line: Hopeless romantics - you need this film. It's a chance to experience those goose bump moments in life again.
Review: Preamble
Let's get this straight. I don't like musicals. Grease? Sure, it had its time and place. The Music Man? High school fodder for David Cassidy wannabees.

And then there's Moulin Rouge. (Insert dramatic pause here). Either...

Movie musicals are officially cool again!

Date of Review:  May 26, 2001
The Bottom Line: Your feet will move, your eyes will dance and your ears will have a ball. Surely that's a better prospect than The Mummy Part 6!
Review: Modern moviegoers are a tough lot to impress. Gone are the days in which an audience would sit quietly and wait 55 minutes before Ridley Scott's Alien or Steven Spielberg's Jaws would slither across the screen. You need look no further than the most...

Moulin Rouge!
2/5 stars
Moulin Rouge is a musical starring Ewan MacGregor and Nicole Kidman. A lot of people love this film, but I just can't get into it. I think it's bizarre, trippy, and very corny. It's worth at least one viewing, because the visuals are very stunning, but that's the best I can say about it. I'm not saying it's a bad film, I just personally did not enjoy it. Pros: Great visuals Cons: Very corny, Trippy, and bizarre
