Larry does nonfiction well, too.

Date of Review:  Aug 22, 2000
Review: I picked up this book today - and read it today. I was unable to put it down. This is a nonfiction account of 9 months last year and nine road trips the author took.

It's not a book about sights seen along the road, such as the biggest ball...

Endless, monotonous highway; endless, monotonous book

Date of Review:  Mar 8, 2001
The Bottom Line: avoid this book if at all possible; nothing of merit in it
Review: Usually I am fascinated by Larry McMurtry's novels - the characters are compelling, the plots full of twists, and, what I like best of all, he seems to have a way of finding the perfect descriptive phrase, the phrase that makes you put the book down...

A road map to Larry McMurtry's heart

Date of Review:  Sep 28, 2000
Review: It's been said that the Interstate Highway System finally made it possible to travel from one coast of America to the other without seeing anything.

But "Roads," Larry McMurtry's new collection of essays, part Jack Kerouac, part William...

Professional Reviews

Hughes, Robert J., Wall Street Journal: "Mr. McMurtry doesn't present any grand opinions on the state of the U.S. Instead, like the fine writer he is, he allows an accretion of detail to paint an entertaining, knowing and sympathetic picture of our idiosyncratic American culture."

First Line

I wanted to drive the American roads at the century's end, to look at the country again, from border to border and beach to beach. My son, James, a touring musician who sees, from ground level, a great deal of America in the line of duty, says that when it isn't his turn to drive the van he likes to sit for long stretches, looking out the window. "There's just so much to see," he says, and he's right. There's just so much to see.
