Call of Duty: Finest Hour puts you in the front lines, on all the front lines, and it feels like your in the front lines. This game brings a whole new perspective to World War Two games. Sure, you can jump into a tank or airplane on any old game, but does it actually give you the different perspectives of all sorts of soldiers? The new Russian recruit, the experianced sniper, the tank engineer. They all are playable on this game, plus it gives you the game on all different fronts from Stalingrad to North Africa and all three allied countries, USA, Great Britain, and the Soviet Union! The time you spend playing this game will be your finest hours.
Controls: The controls are very smooth. It follows the basic first-person shooter precident set by Halo and Halo 2. The controls are generally the same but it replaced the melee button with A and grenades are now X. B crouches like in most non-Halo FPSs. The game runs smoothly and makes all weapons fun, from sniper to heavy machine gun.
Storyline: This game doesn't focus as much on the huge battles of World War II, but rather on the individual "finest hours" of a variety of soldiers. It starts out with the battle of Stalingrad and takes you from a private, to a sniper, to a tank commander. You go on foot and by vehicle on various objective missions. You then go to British special forces in North Africa and after several British missions you go to the US soldiers. The game has a neat way of following individuals and their missions while maintaining a cool WWII storyline. The levels are cleverly designed with many bunkers, sniping points, and even open spaces. Your objectives range from capturing key buildings, taking out enemies, to delivering a radio! You get around using an objective icon on a small map in the bottom left corner (which also acts as a compass). It has good level layouts that will keep you wanting more!
Weapons: The game has a wide variety of historically accurate weapons. Each one is balanced and fun. The sniper is probably the most fun to play with, since it gives you the opportunity to see the whole battlefield and use stealth. However, the machine guns are excellent and the game has a variety of grenades and specialty guns such as the german Panzershreck (a rocket launcher), that its insanely fun to play
Sound: If you have surround sound, you will immediately fall in love with this game. People say Medal of Honor has the best surround sound for a wargame, but Call of Duty is giving it a run for its money. Amazing! Also, take a look at the weapon and character sounds. There is nothing like hearing the ring of your sniper rifle as you take out the officer muttering commands in German! Sure, it might not make sense that as a Russian you're speaking English, but the beauty is the enemies, not you.
Multiplayer: Its tricky to get used to, but fun. If you have system link parties or play on Xbox Live, you may spend hours here and there sniping, shooting, and blowing stuff up. Cool maps and gametypes. Maps range from open squares to small villages. You can play Deathmatch (every man for himself killing), Team DeathMatch (teams killing), and Capture the Flag ('nuff said.)
All together: Call of Duty is great! Its well worth it and isn't just another WWII game. It has a unique perspective and makes your gaming that much more enjoyable
