The Little Modem That Could

Date of Review: May 16, 2000

I recently purchased a computer, an AMD K6-2 500Mhz, 64Megs of RAM. Inside was a 3Com US Robotics 56K Faxmodem. I was reassured. Because I know that US Robotics set the standard in modems.

I have used 3Com US Robotics modems all of my life. I believe that they are the best in performance. They deliver a 56K connection speed. Although a real 56K connection is impossible for an analog line. So I put it to the test. I connected my phone line to the modem and off I went. I connected through an ISP, and went to a travel page. The graphics loaded quickly and smooth. Going from web page to web page was a breeze. There was no slowing down when I checked my email either. I could view pictures on the Internet fast and easy. I decided to put it to the real test. Download time. I started to download a file that was around 1Meg. The speed was impressive, but you have to take into consideration that I was using AOL as my ISP. The file was not broken either. I decided to download a demo of a program that was over 2.5Megs. The speed was a bit slower that the other file, but the modem maintained a constant speed that I could live with. This file was not broken either. US Robotics modems are reliable and durable. Although I would not recommend that you open up your computer and do some tampering to see how durable it really is. I have never had a hardware or software conflict with this modem. This aspect really impressed me since I had problems in that area in the past. Their web site is very easy to navigate and also offers customer support as well as technical support.

3Com has been around since 1979. They have over 235 patents in technology advancements. They are truly the leaders in cutting edge technology and modems. I would recommend this modem to anyone that wants a fast, reliable, and durable modem. They can be a bit expensive, depending on which modem you choose, but they always deliver the excellence that your can expect from a quality modem and a quality company.
