The Rival is NOT a SLOW cooker
Date of Review: Feb 4, 2008
The Bottom Line: I do not recommend this product. The cooking time is unpredictable because the unit gets too hot.
I received the Rival Oval Programmable Stainless Steel Crock Pot (5.5-qt) as a Christmas present. My crock pot was over 20 years old. It still worked but the temperature/on/off knob was becoming unreliable and I wanted an oval crock instead of the round crock.
The Rival unit has a sleek stainless and black exterior, with an updated LCD control and timer.
I was very disappointed with this unit's performance. If the food was left to cook for the recommend cooking time it would have been burned. The meal cooked in almost half the time the recipe called for. I only used the LOW setting and during that short time the food was burning, sticking to the sides, and boiling/bubbling.
I would never recommend leaving this appliance unattended for the day. I would not cook with it overnight in my house while I sleep. The stainless body of the cooker is extremely hot while cooking, do not touch it as you will burn yourself. BEWARE if you have small children.
I returned the unit and would not recommend it.
I replaced it with the Hamilton Beach 6-qt. Programmable Slow Cooker for the same price. The Hamilton Beach comes with a temperature probe to prevent over-cooking. It also has the sleek stainless steel and black exterior with the LCD control panel. This unit works like a dream.
