Product Review

A good field scope

by   exscream ,   Aug 28, 2008

Pros:  Good sharp high contrast optics. Good size field.

Cons:  It is plastic. The focusing mechanism is lousy.

Overall Rating: 3/5 stars

Author's Review

I bought this microscope to be used in the field, on travels etc. I did not expect much for this price, but was surprised about the images quality. I tested it with my own diatom slides. The slides that come with it make the microscope look bad. I recommend this microscope only as a second unit, that you can take outside and don't have to worry about something happening to it. For a good microscope, I recommend paying at least $150.- or more.
Don't use the battery powered light. A desk lamp works well with the mirror. Outdoors, use a white cloud as a light source. Do not use the sun!!! Leave the disk under the stage at the largest opening. Take off the stage clips, they make the slide too hard to move, which is undesirable when you have a one pound instrument and a stage that drops when you look at it.

Look At This! Buy this Meade 8200 for a science student, or for an inquisitive kid. It's a starter microscope, but it's definitely not a toy...
