Author's Review
This is the Acer Aspire One notebook with the 6 cell lithium ion battery. My version came loaded with Windows XP Home. I'm typing my reveiew on it right now. I love it.
I get about 5 hours battery (REALLY!), more if I turn off the wifi. What this means is I take this with me to my office at work and bring it with me to meetings. It starts up REALLY fast (about 10 seconds from standby, about 45 seconds from Hibernate) and I can take notes right there. There's wifi at my bus stop, so I surf the web while waiting for the bus. Great!
The other things I was worried about was whether it would run real applications; it seems to do very well under all my computing needs. It can run MS office fine, but that's not the point of this laptop; I use it mainly as a secondary computer. I think it could do okay if you wanted to use it as a primary laptop. It runs Itunes fine, runs Audacity (which is audio recording), and, best of all, does web video well. So, I regularly watch HULU and netflix streaming without a hitch. Pandora and web radio also works well. Runs Gmail, firefox, etc like a pro. Also does skype well. I wouldn't run 10 applications together, but it can usually handle one web video + facebook + an open office document.
The screen is very bright and pleasant. It is 8.9 inch, but I have good eyesight and this is fine for me. Some reviews have complained about a cheap feeling keyboard. I feel like it does fine.
Two technical things to note for people after they buy it:
1) I had problems with the wireless like many people. But try this fix-it worked for me. http://wordpress.com/tag/acer-aspire-one-wireless-problems/
2) The fan is annoying and always on. Get the 3rd party fan control application and you can set when the fan turns on and off. My settings are 60 ON and 52 OFF. Without the fan control the fan is almost always on. Does get a little hot (all laptops do), but not nearly as hot as the laptops I'm used to burning my lap.
