Author's Review
Having three teenage girls in the house all at one time was very interesting. There was always friends over, coming and going and lots of girly magazines. My oldest daughter was a gymnast which led to teaching pre-school tumbling and also cheerleading classes. This seemed to help her fulfill her squashed competition dreams after she ripped her achilles tendon for the second time. The doctor told her no more competition and her days as a gymnast ended at Level 6. That is how American Cheerleader Magazine made it's way into our home. I recently took out another subscription to the magazine because it helps me keep up with teens and their activities. These kind of resources come in handy when I'm working on freelance writing on the subject of teens.
American Cheerleader Magazine
American Cheerleader Magazine is for cheerleaders on the high school squad, All-Star teams or other competitive cheerleading teams. It is for males, as well as females and focuses on all aspects of cheerleading.
The magazine is published bi-monthly and retails for $3.95 per issue or $14.95 per year for a subscription.
Articles
I found a pretty good assortment of different kinds of articles in American Cheerleader Magazine. Most of the articles focus on cheering, fundamentals, and techniques. However, there are lots of other articles on health, nutrition, fitness, safety, personal trainers, fundraising, etc.
The most recent issue I got had several feature articles on summer camps. These articles focused on team stunts, new routines, and teamwork.
Another asset to buying this magazine if you are in the cheerleading field, is to keep up with the latest styles and equipment. There are numerous ads for uniforms, shoes, poms, spirit sticks, buttons, ribbons, etc.
The magazine is more focused on girls than guys, but you will see articles on teams with males on the team. This is good to see since cheerleading is becoming more popular with the guys, especially in college. Most all cheerleading teams have both males and females on the team on collegiate teams. The advantage to this is being able to do more difficult stunts. The power and strength of a male is needed to hoist a female cheerleader several feet in the air and be able to support their weight when they come down.
My favorite part of the magazine is the cover. Each issue stars the Cheerleader of the Month. She is an actual cheerleader, not just a model for the cover. A feature article giving the story about his or her life is included in the issue. I can remember a few months back when a set of twins were featured as the Cheerleaders of the month. It was an interesting story since I am a mother of twins myself.
Presentation
American Cheerleader Magazine is put together very nicely. It is packed with nice color photographs and articles that are helpful and useful to cheerleaders. The articles are also written in a manner that both younger and older cheerleaders can understand and relate to.
Final Thoughts
Although there are a fair number of ads in this publication, it is not necessarily a bad thing. I can remember how my daughter loved looking at the ads and seeing the new styles.
This magazine will keep your cheerleader up to date on styles, stunts, routines and the latest in the competition world. I highly recommend it!
