Author's Review
When I was a little girl, I lived by this movie. I had the same red dress she had, a complete bedding set, the blue limo...I had it all. I even have red hair! I lived Annie.
Well 20 years later I still love Annie, I am just not obessed over her anymore. (Thank the Lord)
Annie was the 1982 hit based on the comic strip and broadway play. The film is based in the 30's and is about a little red head orphaned named Annie, Aileen Quinn, who resides at the Hudson street orphanage. The orphanage is ran by Miss Hannigan, played perfectly by Carol Burnett, Miss Hannigan is not exactly mother of the year. She can not stand her little girls, is in a constant state of drunkeness, and imagines the radio show host as her "man".
The film opens with a beauty of a song "Maybe" in which Annie sings about what her parents maybe doing at that moment. After a few minutes of dialogue between the orphans and Miss Hannigan they break into the fun filled song "Its a hard knock life" Which the rapper Jay-Z later re-did (Not the exact same version)
I do not want to give away big parts of the film, so I am going to jump a scene and go right into the next.
Grace Farrow (Ann Reiking) goes to the orphanage to pick one to stay for a week at the home of Billionaire Oliver Warbucks (Albert Finney) she selects Annie, much to the dismay of Miss Hannigan.
Annie travels to Mr. Warbucks home, which is the size of a train station, and is competely in awe. She has never seen anything that majestic in her whole life. She has new clothes, she's going to movies, she eats good food, and to her confusion she does not have to clean to earn her keep. Of course she does not mind.
Mr. Warbucks wants to adopt Annie but she has her heart set on finding her own real parents so Mr. Warbucks starts a search for Annie's parents. Offereing them 50k when they come to get her. Miss Hannigan's brother, Rooster (Tim Curry) and his girlfriend, Lilly (Bernadette Peters) talk Miss Hannigan into allowing them to act like Annie parents so they can kidnap her and take the money.
Now the race is on. Some orphans over hear the plot and set out to find Annie before the adults find her.
This movie is just great! The songs are fun and delightful, the dancing is well done, and the acting is complete perfection! It is one of those movies where if you liked it as a child, you will still like it as an adult.
