Product Review

Good things come in little packages.

by   payne34 ,   Sep 17, 2006

Pros:  Small, flash drive instead of hard drive, lightweight, easy to use.

Cons:  scratches easily, not a ton of storage space, must have same computer to update.

The Bottom Line:  Great for taking your music wherever you go. Small enough to use during whatever your doing.

Overall Rating: 5/5 stars

General Information
When it comes to size vs. storage you can't go wrong with the Nano from apple. It is the smallest mp3 on the market and offers three different sizes of memory (1gb, 2gb, and 4gb). The 1gb holds up to 240 songs or 15,000 digital photos. The 2gb holds 500 songs or 25,000 digital pictures, and the 4gb holds 1,000 songs or 25,000. That is remarkably smaller than any of the other Ipods that apple puts out and can still hold up to 1,000 songs. There is no difference in the actual size of the Ipod (They are all 0.3" thin, 3.5" tall, 1.6" wide, and weigh an astounding 1.5 oz.!) just how much music, and pictures the Ipod can hold. They come in two different colors (black and white), but you can buy any color of cover for those who like to show a little bit of personality on their Ipod. Capability also includes an up to date calender of customized events, and a contact and address book. Rechargeable lithium ion
battery lasts anywhere from 10-15 hours depending on the way you use it. The longer the back light is on the quicker you battery will discharge. This battery does not take that long to charge but it also depends on how you charge it. Charging it through the USB port takes longer on average but if you have a slower USB port it will take an abnormal amount of time to charge and may never get a complete charge. If you charge it through a docking station or a wall charger it takes up to 30 minutes (in most cases it doesn't take the full 30 minutes) to completely charge the Nano.

Sound And Play Qualities
The playing qualities on this Ipod are excellent. Apple does a superb job at keeping there line of Ipods to a high quality of music. This statement is true as long as your songs are of good quality. If there are glitches in your audio files the quality will be less than great. This has nothing to do with the Ipod itself but the audio files.

Itunes
Ipod made putting music on as easy as they have in the other versions of the Ipod using itunes. Itunes and the Ipod Nano both support MP3, MP3 VBR, AAC, Protected AAC, Audible, AIFF, Apple Lossless and WAV audio files. As well as being able to add the following types of digital photos: BMP, JPEG, GIF, TIFF, PNG and PSD (Mac only). And itunes make it easy to create playlists, organize your music and create slide shows. All you have to do to create a playlist is click the "create a playlist" button, name the playlist what you want, and then click and drag the songs over that you want in that particular playlist. Itunes also makes it easy for you to download new music, photos, podcasts, and audio books through the itunes music store. Podcasts being broadcast for your Ipod and audio books are like books on CD but in Ipod format.

Nike+ Accessory
Apple and Nike came out with a new product exclusively for the Nano. It's called Nike and is used for running. It plugs into the bottom of the Nano and a little chip is inserted into the runner's shoe and with a little setup of how long your running and walking stride are it calculates how far you have run, how long you have been running, and with the help of nike.com keeps a running journal which tracks your progress. It comes with a customizable "pick me up song" for when your Ipod senses that you are starting to slow down. This is a $60 package for the software, the two chips, and the specialized armband made by Nike to hold the chip in the bottom of the Ipod for those of you who are like me and worry about it falling out and breaking. A reasonable price to pay if you are interested in tracking your running progress easily.

Accessories
The Nano has accessories like the bigger 30gb photo and video as well as the 60gb photo and video Ipods. Giving those who like to take there music anywhere. Using the FM transmitter ($50.99)you can play your Ipod anywhere that has a radio with FM stations. This includes cars, boats, as well as most peoples homes and places of work. A wall charger ($39.99) that comes separately. There are also docking stations that can charge and have playback at the same time so you are always ready to go in case you don't have the time to plug it into your wall charger or if you don't want to purchase a wall charger the docking stations do a great job of charging your Ipod.

What Do I Think About The Nano?
The Nano has saved me many times during some long, boring workouts and drives. It has also enabled me to listen to books for some of classes while I am driving. The only downside to me is that I have to have my computer to update it. If I used another computer, it will erase all of the songs already on it, and put new ones on. It is definitely one thing that I don't think I would be able to live without!! The included headphones are suitable for everyday use but for any type of physical activity such as running or working out the ear buds don't seem to stay in my ears. When I work out I have to wear another type of headphones, but for everyday use the are just fine. I find the construction of the Nano to be above par and at first I was skeptical that due to the small size of the Nano I thought I could break it easily. But I have never had a problem with it breaking or chipping in any way. I believe this Ipod to be very durable due to a great construction by Apple designers.

Pros: Small, storage capacity depending on your needs, easy to download new music through itunes music store, ability to view color pictures, a calender of customized events, and a contact and address book.

Cons: Scratches easily, not an overabundance of storage space, accessories are a little overpriced, only one way to charge without purchasing an accessory.
