Misleading, but nice.

Date of Review: Apr 26, 2000

I have been reading this magazine for years, and I do like the mag a lot. I have only one problem with it. It rarely is about architecture.

Lots of very good articles, great photos, nice writing, but very little actual architecture. Each and every piece seems to be about interiors and interior design. A photo shoot of various famous person's homes. While the interiors are extremely well shot and beautiful, they are not about the building, but the inside.

The furniture they have put in the room and the paintings on the wall; that is not architectural design, it's interior design. Unless the architect designs the furniture specific to the site as Frank Loyd Wright did at times, it has nothing to do with the design of the structure.

I have also spoken to people who have been at AD shoots or have had their homes included in one, and they have said that a lot of the time AD brings in their own elements to dress up a picture. Extra furniture or a carpet here and there. I am not saying that this is wrong, but it adds to my impression that everything is a bit false.

I will continue to read the magazine because I really do like it and I use it a lot as reference in my artwork or graphic design, but I do think it is a bit disingenuous to call yourself one thing, and be another.
