I got the Avent Isis pump when I was pregnant with my daughter. I was planning on returning to work part time and there was the possibility of not having an appropriate place to pump because of a small office and lack of private space. I felt that a manual pump was the best way to go.
The Isis is relatively easy to assemble since there are not many parts. It may be a bit confusing at first, but you will be able to easily reassemble it after a few uses. However there is one tiny part called the "white star valve" that can easily be installed wrong. It is that piece you must be extra careful about installing correctly. If it is not in properly, the pump will not work.
The Avent bottles fit right into the pump. If you choose to, the bottle can be transferred right to the freezer for storage.
With a little bit of practice, I found the pump very easy to use, as well as very comfortable. There is a part called the "let-down massage cushion" that fits into the funnel that goes onto the breast. It is designed to help stimulate the milk flow to make pumping easier. It didn't work for me. I found pumping without the cushion to work much better. Once I found a way that worked for me, I was able to pump often and easily. As with any pump, but especially with a manual pump, pumping will take some practice. You need to find the right groove and method to effective pumping. If you have problems, following the "hints to help you succeed" section of the manual is very helpful.
The small size of this pump makes it very easy to travel with. Before my daughter was 2 months old, I had to attend a wedding as well as a funeral/wake. I was easily able to bring the pump with me to these functions by just tossing it into a large pocketbook. I also didn't have to worry about finding a place to plug it in.
Since my second child was born, I was given a hand held electric pump made by another company. I find this pump to be so noisy that I usually use my Avent instead, and I get the same results.
This is a great pump for occasional use. I usually use it from 1-3 times per week. I would recommend it for the person who will need to occasionally pump.
