Author's Review
I bought this game for my husband who is an avid fan of games like "Starcraft", "Star Wars: Rebellion" and "MechWarrior". He loved the board game and thought it would be great if he had the computer game.
I gladly purchased the game for around $35, brought it home, and installed the 49 meg game onto my 3 gig drive. No big deal, until he played the game and I returned to the machine to do my regular internet duties. I got errors telling me that there wasn't any disk space left on my machine.
I quickly began looking for the saved games on the hard disk to find that each game save averaged 20 meg. And when I asked my husband if he was ever prompted to save the game he said no. I realized that it had auto-save features and was slowly eating away at our memory space.
I uninstalled the game and reinstalled it to see if there were settings I could arrange for saved game features and there were none.
Since then, I have corrected the problem by insisting that my husband defragment the hard drive after every session. Not to mention the havoc it wreaked on my soundcard (Ensoniq Vivo). There is no getting around the game saving aspect of this software. I find this is a major flaw in the software's set up and almost didn't let my husband use it anymore, but that's not fair... :-)
He loves the actual game, but it does horrible things to your system, especially if your system is a couple of years old. Beware: the patches I downloaded stopped the limited memory warnings, but did nothing to help me recover my soundcard settings and still make it necessary to defrag my drive after every session.
I don't know if these problems are limited to just the "Iron Blitz" version of Axis & Allies, or if this is a problem inherent in all the latest versions of the game.
