It really IS the Ultimate Driving Machine!
Pros:
It's all about the ride -- nothing else even comes close.
Cons:
Amp, speakers could be better; needs equalizer; clunky audio controls; iDrive, cup holders
The Bottom Line:
Awesome car. Unbeatable ride.

Basic 528i has 230 hp; 6-speed automatic makes great use of the power -- it feels like more hp than it actually has. "Sport Mode" is exactly that -- delayed shifting for strong acceleration. Otherwise, shifting is very smooth.
Superb handling, especially brakes. Good gas mileage. Quiet interior, comfortable seats. Extremely good cruise control (necessary because it's so easy to lose track of speed :-) A joy to drive. The 3 series is lighter and turns a little tighter -- but the 5 has a smoother ride without sacrificing much in a sharp turn.
BMW likes to sell run-flat tires (required in the 3 series as there is no spare). The 5 series carries a spare, so run-flat is an option to be avoided if you want a smooth/quiet ride.
Electronic features are often criticized but this is often overstated. A technophobic person might be better off with a 3 series instead. Any computer-literate person can learn iDrive without much effort. Everything you need for driving can be done without iDrive.
I think the iDrive computer should be redesigned using commodity hardware + Linux -- make it "the ultimate hacking machine". Certain high-tech owners would build a better interface for themselves and distribute it to the rest of us. At the very least, BMW should use a common platform for both the nav and non-nav cars.
On the other hand, Bluetooth features work great with Blackberry and Motorola RAZR. IPod integration is not perfect but still better than any other car I have seen.
The stock sound system is adequate for my taste. Sirius satellite and HD Radio are popular options. The premium sound system is pricey and people disagree about its performance and value. Aftermarket audio is a tricky proposition. I liked the Cadillac and Acura sound systems better, but not enough to prevent me from buying the BMW.
Ordering can be complicated. Certain options are nearly impossible to add later. There are some long-term concerns about over-equipping the car and paying Pentagon prices for repairs in the future. I chose the premium, cold weather, and iPod packages. I passed on everything else.
Passengers will be comfortable, but only the driver can appreciate what this car has to offer. People who want every conceivable feature would be better off with an Acura.
