Author's Review
My dad said "i'll take it" at the BMW dealership, having been there no longer than 15 minutes. it must have been the fastest sale of a $70,000 car that salesman had ever done.
He was looking at the mercedes CLK, and was also thinking about a Porsche, which he had owned a few years previously(911 Carrera), but surely enough he fell in love with the deep red M5 sedan.
It took awhile for him to let me show him how to operate the GPS, and once activated shows in real time your position relative to the road you are currently on. the car comes with a CD that has on it a vast map of your area. this cd loads into a cd-rom in the trunk of the car, and when accessed by the GPS LCD screen, can give you directions to wherever you wish to go.
The lcd also has current info such as the outside temperature, your remaining fuel, estimated miles remaining until the tank is empty, and other such interesting reading material. while in the M5 with my dad for the first time, we came to a long, steep hill. upon reaching the base of that hill, my dad said "watch this" 3rd gear, pedal floored..... this car does not know the meaning of the word 'hill'. it accelerated faster up hill than most cars would dream of accelerating on a flat plane.
When you have 400horsepower at your disposal, you need some comfy seats to latch on to. when accelerating you sink into the back of its beautiful bucket seats that seem to say hello, stay awhile.
Its style is mostly that of the traditional BMW, one difference is that its a bit larger, and the front grill is more rounded while coated with chrome that also shines on the rims.
Can a sports car have roomy, comfortable back seats? BMW thinks so, the M5's back seats are just as comfortable as any other luxury sedan. all the standard features such as reading lights and large trunk are also present. but for some reason this car just feels great, we also have a BMW 523i, which is also a great car, but doesn't have the same feeling as the M5. my only conclusion is just that the 523i is a standard mass production car. while the M5 is a specialty automobile that had every single detail refined and perfected to make the car and its passengers feel as one.
There is one small problem however, but its not with the car. its with the potential driver, you better get a very good radar detector or the police will be at your heels at every moment. this car WANTS to go fast, and so does the driver! you feel like your depriving yourself and the car if you don't break the speed limit and see what that engine can really do. My dad claims that this car IS a bit faster than his previously owned Porsche, and i believe him. i also had the privilege to ride in that car as well. while the Porsche has a higher pitch accelerating scream, the M5 has a massive roar of power.
In all of the Porsche commercials, they always say at the end, "Porsche, there is no substitute", the M5 is not a substitute. Its a rival.
