Author's Review
Babymouse is a comic created exclusively for Amazon.com
Babymouse: Heartbreaker is No. 5 in the Babymouse series for upper Primary-lower middle grade readers.
Babymouse is an unconquerable girl, ummm, mouse who is a student in a school peopled with a diversity of animal classmates. At home is her younger brother who idolizes her.
As this episode opens, Valentine's Day is imminent. Babymouse who is best when she daydreams has reveries filled with all the romance the day suggests. She envisions candy and flowers and cupcakes and cute heart outfits.
An upcoming Valentine's Day dance send Babymouse into a flurry of activity as she focuses all of her confidence and vigor into getting a date for the dance. The dance makes for an abundance of outstanding daydreaming from Cinderella to makeovers, fine-looking princes, and dazzling moves on the dance floor. Lots of real life calamity takes place when her Glamourmouse makeover falls short and Babymouse is left without a date to the dance.
As is found in other Babymouse books, all the old reserves are here, the Cupcakes, that smarmy narrator who chats about the various situations Miss Heroine enters, dream episodes, and, naturally, the locker creature.
Babymouse watches as the other girls get dates for dance, at the same time that there seems no date for her. Although, the biggie about Babymouse, it is the thing that makes Babymouse tales so appealing for the younger middle grade girls who most enjoy the tales is that Babymouse just never gives up, she does not quit. And in the end, she is successful.
Babymouse, with her abundant flights of the imaginary life, her sardonic sense of humor and that touchy liaison with the monster in her locker along with that snarky narrator of her stories, is a girl who even in her day dream will take a tumble when running down the steps of the palace at midnight only to hop up bruised and battered, muttering -Typical-. When she kisses a frog, no prince here, he becomes a snake. She tries a make over to appear more feminine, with make-up and curled whiskers, and her own -mirror mirror on the wall- begins laughing at her.
As in the other Babymouse books, the pink and white and black illustrations are side-splitting, child appealing and just plain fun. Babymouse Heartbreaker is a nicely devised, illustrated and child pleasing work filled with many of the problems kids face at school, dont want to discuss or admit and is presented in a comic book format poor readers can also find appealing.
Babymouse is the kid who always faces life full tilt only to have life tilt right back. It is a little beyond the interest level of my First Grade, however, by end of the school term the more grown up little girls had discovered Babymouse and had fallen in love. Happy to recommend for the target audience.
