Author's Review
When I said that I wanted this appliance for Christmas, my family laughed. I had to convince them that I was serious. I am so glad they believed me, because it is one of my all time favorite gifts. Not only is it something that I use every single day, but it saves me precious time in the morning.
The appliance is basically a two-slot toaster with an appendage - a "sidecar" where you can poach an egg. Combine the egg with toast, English muffin or bagel and you have a sandwich a la Egg McMuffin. It can also reheat pre-cooked meat, such as a slice of ham, Canadian bacon, precooked bacon or sausage.
Even if you are not a fan of McMuffin style breakfast sandwiches, this appliance is a gem for it's hands-free egg cooker. Instead of standing over the stove, keeping tabs on a fried egg, simply break the egg into the mini pan (it's almost as fun as an Easy Bake oven!). Add water to the bottom of the well, and push a button to start the toaster.
It cooks the egg perfectly EVERY time. You can control the done-ness of the egg by the amount of water that you add, using the included measuring cup as a guide. Because everything is enclosed and timed by the appliance, I can use those extra minutes each morning to check email, pack lunches or browse the newspaper.
The operation is simple enough that my 10-year-old daughter can use it safely, without supervision.
Some hints:
-Always spray the included egg pan with cooking spray to keep the egg from sticking.
- Don't forget to add the water to the bottom of the well!
- If you are cooking an egg, you must push "Egg/Toast." The default setting is toast, so if you just push "start," you will get toast and a raw egg. (been there, done that!)
- If you are reheating meat on the meat tray, water tends to collect on the egg. I recommend draining off the condensation before removing the egg from the pan, so that you don't get your toast soggy.
You can do poached eggs (yolk intact) or scrambled eggs. You can also boil eggs in the shell for hard- or soft-boiled eggs. The toaster accommodates bread, english muffins, and bagels with ease. The appliance includes the basic toaster unit, a rack to hold the mini pan for cooking an egg (the rack also holds eggs in the shell for boiling), a meat rack for reheating precooked meat, a clear plastic vented lid, a measuring cup, and a recipe book. Everything except the main toaster unit can be washed in the dishwasher, but because I use it every single day, I generally wash everything by hand so that it is ready for the next use. The egg pan is nonstick and cleans up very easily.
