Louder Than Words: A Mother's Journey in Healing Autism

After Jenny McCarthy went public about her son's diagnosis, I was thrilled.  Being the mother of a son diagnosed with Pervasive Developmental Disorder, an Autism Spectrum Disorder, I was so happy that Autism would be getting more publicity.  I hoped it meant that more funding for research would follow.  I went out and bought the book after seeing her on Oprah.  After reading the book, I was very disappointed.  I felt that Jenny McCarthy portrayed herself as the “know it all” of Autism.  She seemed to feel that she knew more than the average parent just from googling everything.  I know that all treatments don’t work for all children but I wouldn’t put my child at risk to try a treatment that no one knows for sure is safe.  I also don’t believe that there is a cure for Autism.  I don’t understand how she can say she cured her son (although if I had the money for better and more therapies for my son I am sure he would be progressing more than he is now).  I guess I am just a skeptic.  I would recommend reading this book, but I would try to borrow it from someone or the library before going out and buying it.
