Author's Review
Dumas is a French author through and through. That means that he writes in a witty, all encompassing style with massive plots, detailed characters, and vivid imagery and scenery. If you are the kind of person that thinks Steele novels are wordy, then don't read this book. It requires a certain amount of effort on the reader's part because it isn't an action movie. It has quality and style, beauty and power, drama and danger, suspense and mystery. It is a truly great novel, and a stellar ending to the Musketeer series.
"Man in the Iron Mask" concludes the cycle that began with "The Three Musketeers", and is a fitting end to a mammoth effort of action, intrigue, suspense, romance, and adventure. In this the musketeers, all working on different sides of the crown, attempt to save France from the Tyranny of her King, and the adventures that follow. This is actually the third book in a trilogy that concludes the story of D'Artagnan, Athos, Porthos, and Aramis, pitting friend against friend as court intrigue and mysteries from the past haunt the King and his position on the throne. Most everyone has heard the story before but a half heard tale is nothing compared to the original. Read this book. Note: Do not read the Signet version, which is edited terrible, missing a lot from the original, and overall of poor quality. Another Note: Do not see the movie, nor base your opinion of the book on the movie. I have no idea where they got the script for that piece of filth but it had no basis in this book
