Product Review

Another great book by Eugenides

by   lithead ,   Jul 2, 2004

Pros:  Very well researched, with an epic slant that keeps you turning those pages.

Cons:  A bit slow at the start.

Overall Rating: 5/5 stars

Author's Review

I'm in awe at the way he wove genetic biology, Greek history and the Greek immigrant experience into a compelling and most unusual coming of age story. I learned much about the Greeks that I didn't in "My Big Fat Greek Wedding," and with a name like Eugenides, I figured he was writing pretty close to home. As for the hermaphrodite aspect of the story, fascinating! I don't think we've ever seen a story narrated by one. Hard to say how "authentic" the voice is, having never (knowingly) met one, but Eugenides clearly did lots of research here, and again, I learned tons. Nine years after "The Virgin Suicides," this is miles away in most respects, except that again, he does a superb job conveying the complex emotional life of adolescents, whether male, female or somewhere in between.
