Author's Review
I was given this book by my older brother as a graduation gift, and I read it occasionally to remember him, to hear words of encouragement, or just for fun. Even after reading it many times over, it puts a smile on my face and helps me to believe in myself. I have discovered that the author of the book, Dr. Seuss, believes in me, too. That is why he wrote the book. His audience is both the young and the old. He wants everyone to know that they are the deciders of their destiny and that they are capable of terrific things.
What a great message for a children’s book! Reading this will make you smile and have more confidence in yourself. His messages are profound, reassuring, and something that can be applied all throughout your life.
Let me walk you through the book. He starts off by congratulating you and saying that you are off to great places. He tells you that you have brains in your head and feet in your shoes, and you get to decide where your knowledge will lead you. You have the ability to choose for yourself how you will live your life and where you will go. That’s something that we often forget. He goes on to say that you can choose any path to go down, but “you’re too smart to go down any not-so-good street”. Dr. Seuss explains that you will have your high moments where you feel great and you will also have your low moments where you will find yourself in a slump. “And when you’re in a slump, you’re not in for much fun. Un-slumping yourself is not easily done.”
One of his messages is that when you find yourself feeling down, you’ve got to pick yourself up and get back on track. It’s hard to get back on track, though, and you might just end up not going anywhere. You will not be progressing or getting any better. You’ll just be waiting around. Dr. Seuss calls this “waiting place” a “most useless place”. “NO! This is not for you!”, he exclaims. You can move on to better things and continue down a good path. But, he points out, sometimes you will be alone and sometimes you won’t want to go on. He says, “I know you’ll hike far and face up to your problems, whatever they are.” He ends by saying, “And will you succeed? Yes! You will indeed! You’re mountain is waiting. So get on your way!”
The moral of his story is inspiring and enlightening for adults, but not only that - it is also a great book for children to enjoy. The colors are bright and the illustrations are fun and imaginative. I think you’ll agree with me when I say that Dr. Seuss has never wavered in his ability to hold children’s attention because of all of his funny pictures, rhymes, and made-up words.
The book Oh The Places You’ll Go! is a very easy read. Sometimes you will stumble over his silly words, but every line rhymes with the next, so it flows very well. That’s something that I really like about Dr. Seuss books - they are fun to read and full of encouraging messages!
I bought this book for a friend at a yard sale, so it only cost me $3, but originally it was $13.99. It was still in good condition and after having been read, flipped through, played with, thrown around and sucked on by my friend’s child it is still looking great! The hard back book is sturdy and will last a long time.
This book makes a great children’s bedtime story, enjoyable for both children and parents. It also makes a wonderful gift for anyone who is making a major life change, such as graduation, to give them a word of encouragement. But this book is not only good for gifts and bedtime readings, it is also great for sharing with someone who is feeling down.
We all need reassurance and a boost of self-esteem at times and Oh The Places You’ll Go! does an excellent job of that in a fun and entertaining format. Reading the book over and over again will remind you that you are capable of doing great things, and you’ll never forget Dr. Seuss’s inspiring message. “Kid, you’ll move mountains!”
