What Difference Do It Make?

Date of Review: Oct 21, 2009

What Difference Do It Make? is a book about and by Ron Hall, who is a millionaire art dealer, and Denver, who was a homeless man for many years. Lynn Vincent also wrote some of the book as well, probably contributing the very interesting short stories throughout the book.

Denver Moore is a black man who was raised on a sharecropping farm, knowing no other way of life. He finally left the farm after realizing he was never going to get out ahead, and through events in his life, became homeless. Ron Hall is a white millionaire, who begins to help homeless people with his wife before she passes away. Ron figures that he actually passed Denver for years on his way to work without really noticing it, since Denver stayed around the area of Ron's office while living on the streets.

This book basically tells how one action leads to so many other actions and reactions in other people's lives. Denver reminds us that what God uses one person to start, He often uses others to finish; That no action is insignificant.

This book is very interesting indeed. It is very inspiring as well. I have a few problems with it however. In a few places in the book I feel that it is suggesting that it doesn't really matter who helps and for what reason, but being a Christian I know that our righteousness is as filthy rags. When we ask God to empty us of our selfish selves and use us so that His name may be glorified, that is when we will be a part of His purpose. We must be careful not to start following after humanism, but rather to seek to be God's hands and feet.

As long as one has a firm grasp on their faith and won't be tempted to think we are all good inside, I do think this will be a good read.
