Krista's Uncle Tom Cabin Opinion

I read Uncle Tom’s Cabin about a year ago, and only because it was a historical classic. I wasn’t expecting a great story. I had never really examined the practical results of slavery before; I had only read about the mass effects on a nation. I knew that slavery was wrong, of course, but I never thought about things like babies being sold away from their parents, and how difficult it is for a slave family to retain a sense of family. This book gave a little bit of insight into that sort of thing, as well as the close personal relationships that formed between whites and blacks (even in the South) in a few rare instances.

I do feel obligated to site a few of the book’s drawbacks. As is frequent in books that take place well into the past, the characters have often been written without a strong sense of logic. They do rash things without thinking of the consequences, and they give overdramatic speeches when not really necessary. But if you can look past that, Uncle Tom’s Cabin is a wonderful book. I recommend it for anyone (children included) who can appreciate the consequences of society’s decisions.
