Product Review

Results instead of headache

by   docedwin ,   Jan 7, 2008

Pros:  Easy to use, comfortable grip, flexible and space saver

Cons:  Price, dials are rigid and sometimes stick

The Bottom Line:  Great set of dumbbells for all experience levels with loads of potential. The price may be daunting but the results will prove its worth.

Overall Rating: 5/5 stars

Author's Review

I wasn't sold on the Bowflex Selecttech Dumbbells at first for a few reasons. Primarily because of the price, which came in around $399.99, although I picked mine up for $349.99 (not a boast of my amazing shopping skills). I jokingly told my wife that I would have to sell my right arm to afford the dumbbells, which she of course retorted that cutting off my arm would save us a lot of money, 50% by her math. No, I was not amused by her comment, but mostly because I walked right into it.

As earlier reviews indicated the weights range from 5lbs to 52.5lbs. The weight is adjusted by 2.5lbs increments up to the first 25lbs. This is helpful for those of us that are only accustomed to curling ColdStone Waffle cones, which weigh in around 2.5lbs per scoop of ice cream.

The warranty is very comforting and is probably what sold me ultimately on the product. I liked knowing that if one of the fancy dials, which seemed fragile to me, broke I could return it. There’s also a 5 year warranty on the plates but I haven’t had to use either of the warranties yet. Hopefully, I won’t have to in the future either.

The weight settings are as follows: 5, 7.5, 10, 12.5, 15, 17.5, 20, 22.5, 25, 30, 35, 40, 45, 50, 52.5

The stands are approx. $150 and in my opinion are not worth the investment. I argued with my wife on this one, because I thought the extra $150 should go towards my hair replacement surgery while she wanted to save the hardwood floors. In the end I won the argument, almost had to walk home and still have a shiny bald patch on the back of my head. The $150 was used to buy my Misses a new necklace, which almost got me out of the dog house. The good news is I actually do see results from using the dumbbells. My arms are more defined and my legs have benefited from the squats. I can’t say that they are superior to a standard set of dumbbells in results but I can say that they make it easy to use them. That’s where the real benefit comes in because I don’t have to mess with clunky locks that hurt my hands or worry about dropping weight plates on the floor while I try to get them on the dumbbell. Instead, I just click the selecttech and get a few reps in when I walk by them. As I mentioned before, these dumbbells are very comfortable and won’t hurt your hands like some other products.

I would strongly recommend this product to anyone, no matter the skill level.
