Author's Review
I have been using my Braun 8595 for about 8 months now and am rather pleased with it so far. That's meaningful because I'm usually a pretty tough critic. The automatic cleaning system seems to work really nicely. It must be what's responsible for the 8595 still performing like it just came out of the box every day. It really does.
Areas of complaint are minor: Sometimes it goes into intensive cleaning mode needlessly which uses a little more cleaning fluid, but that's not a bid deal. The cleaning system is a bit noisy and runs from about 25 minutes to around 45 minutes depending on what it deems necessary. In my case, and probably most other people's case, it's not really a problem, as it happens after I'm awake and the noise is therefore inconsequential. But if your partner wants to remain sleeping nearby after you shave, then you might find the 8595 in the backyard after you come home. The charging LED's are quite bright and flash about once a second even when it's done charging. At night when everything else is dark, the LED's are bright enough to light a small room which is nice, but the flashing is really annoying at that time. The LCD panel on the 8595 is not really all that useful. There's not much helpful information there. Fluff. Save your money. Buy the 8585 instead. I would if I had to do it over again. I've had a different Braun once before about 15 years ago, and both it and this one share a somewhat annoying trait. They are designed to be almost impossible to open up and work on. And when one does get inside there are several small, cheaply made plastic parts which are destined to break because of no thought being put into product longevity. It's as if Braun has a policy of making certain that the product doesn't last and doesn't want anyone to fix it. They want you to go out and buy another. I am only hoping that mine will last a while before the inevitable. The obligatory pressed metal trimmer is about as useless/useful as all the others on the market. I don't like them.
On the good side, every shave is like the first. It is quite impressive. And every shave is close and comfortable. Braun wants to get the recurring income of replacement cleaning fluid cartridges at about $10 for a pair of two, but I've found a great way around that. The fluid is nothing more than denatured alcohol with a little perfume mixed in. I went to the hardware store and bought a gallon of denatured alcohol for $10. Enough for cleaning and refilling the cartridge about 20 times. Works great. I've cleaned and refilled mine about 6 times so far.
All in all, I have been quite pleased with my 8595. But save a few bucks and buy the 8585 instead. The shaving and cleaning system is the same. Just some of the fluff is gone.
