Author's Review
I bought is epilator last spring. My legs were extremely irritated and broken out. It got to the point where I couldn't shave at all. I am glad that I waited a while to write this review. It was tough going at the start.
Description of Features
I will go over advertised features
Massaging rollers clip
There are two clips that go around the epilating heads. The "massaging rollers" are knobby rubberized lines that supposedly massage the skin and decrease the pain of hair removal. I don't think it makes much of a difference.
Efficiency Pro clip
This clip surrounds the head plastic piece that seems to comb the hair. I use this clip, because i think it gets more hair and grabs it closer to the skin.
Epilation head with Xpert-épil system
This is the full epilation head.
Starter epilation head
This head has less of the metal tweezers so the company believes that it will be less painful.
Release buttons/
The buttons on both sides release the epilating head.
Switch with incorporated SmartLight
When you turn the device on a light shines directly on the area that you are epilating. This is a great feature and it really helps you. Normally when you use a device like this it would block most of light when you hold it over your skin. This light prevents the device from blocking your light.
Socket for cord connector
Cord connector
Special cord set
All this describes the electrical cord.
Cooling application:
Gel pack
Cooling glove
This describes an ice pack and a glove to use it with. The idea is that you ice down an area before you epilate it. I think that this helps some, but it also slows you down.
Operation
You start with clean dry skin. I suggest sitting on a big towel on the floor. The hair goes flying around everywhere. Hold the device perpendicular to the skin, and go against the direction the hair grows in slow and steady line. The quicker you go, the more passes you will have to make. If one hair keeps getting missed, try running the device from a sideways direction.
Cost
This device cost me $60. A decent disposable razor or disposable razor cartridge costs two or more dollars. They dull very quickly. This device can pay for itself in one summer.
I think that this is a good product that removes hair as it claims. As long as you don't fantasize that it will be pain free, then I think that you will enjoy this product.
What I Think
I believe that overall epilating is pretty comparably to shaving (once you get used to the pain). It lasts a little longer, but not as long as waxing. You can use this epilator on very short hair, which is big advantage over waxing. For waxing, you should wait two to four weeks, which is very inconvenient.
Braun includes several options designed to alleviate the pain of ripping your hair out by the roots. The only things these features do is slow you down. The "starter head" has less metal tweezers. It may be less painful, but it takes twice as long. The massaging roller clip provides no discernible massaging benefit and seems to keep the shortest hairs from being tweezed.
Efficiency and speed are what I value. Hair removal is a painful embarrassing filthy process. Ice helps a little but frankly it adds too much time. I do better by just plunging in. The pain does seem to lessen in time.
One noticeable thing is that waxing also exfoliates the skin. Like shaving, the epilator scrapes off dead some dead skin but not enough to prevent ingrown hairs. It is important to use a moisturizer with an acid base that helps your skin exfoliate itself.
It works very well on your legs and arms. I have not used on my under arms because I had very traumatizing experience with a chemical exfolitator on my underarms so I can't even consider trying something new there. I mostly use it my lower legs. When I first started I kept missing one hair (or two) no matter how careful I was. I felt somewhat paranoid, as if the bristle were waiting for me to finish and popping out full-grown. I found myself, using the Exil every day. If I had another choice, I might have given up. With practice I find that I am doing a better job and it seems to last longer. I should also say that if I am dressing up for something special, I usually end up shaving.
