Author's Review
I was initially going to buy the Emjoi because Amazon had mostly positive reviews, 11 or so . But when I found out about Braun and saw 252+ reviews and mostly positive I was like, whoa! I guess Braun is the way to go if so many people bought it and reviewed it!
I used it last night for the first time and it definitely hurt like hell. I used it on my arms and legs. I used to wax both body parts a long time ago but it's been maybe a year or more since my last wax. Because I was in a hurry and not really intending to do this all (just experimenting to see what level of pain it was) So basically, I half-bleeped it but ended up removing almost all my arm hair, my legs not so much because I was lazy.
Ok, my arms are definitely hairy. Think of it as man's hairy arms and 70% is my arms. I have dark long hairy arms. The manual suggests your arm hair to be shorter but since I haven't waxed since forever my arm hair was pretty long. The kit I used also contained a starter head which I used. This just means that there is less tweezers so not a lot of hair will be removed in one sitting but it will supposedly be less painful. Basically use the starter heard if you are a beginner and then after several days/weeks of using it, move on to the expert head which has more tweezers. They say that it gets less painful/you get used to the pain if you keep using it.
So I used the starter head and there are two levels, the slow and the faster. I used the slow level tried it on my legs. I already read the reviews about how painful it was so I was prepared. When I did it on my legs without any prepping (cold pack, etc.) I felt a little twinge/prickly sensation but the pain wasn't bad. AKA I can live with it. So I got sort of excited. My arms - that was the bane of my life! I already know the waxing pain. So I knew it was going to be painful - and plus my arm hair was long. I grit my teeth and waited for the worst. Slow level and starter head attacked my hairy arms. And... it truly was painful. I wasn't sure if I wanted to go on. Then I thought to myself, well this was the reviews said, that it would hurt! So I grit my teeth and kept on going and it really was painful. I had to stop for a few seconds just to give a little pumping massage on my arms. I'm not a mother but I intend to have children and would like to give birth - natural birth without any drugs. Then I realized, if I can't handle this pain, what more of natural childbirth without drugs??? So after that thought I decided to finish my left arm and also to proceed with the right arm. Once I had that thought in my head it actually became easier to do it. The pain was still there but I kept saying to myself, I can do this I can do this. There was about 3 tiny blood point on each arms once all said and done. And I had to go over a few spots again since I was using the starter head and slow level.
My final answer? It's painful but it was worth it. Also, I think it was mind over matter. Once I said to myself, if I can't handle this little pain, then I can't handle childbirth, it became "easier" to go on with it. The end result was very nice. My arms were a little red but it was gone in the morning and my arms were smooth!! (Woohoo!) Hairless woo hoo!!! I was TRULY considering laser hair removal but now that I have this, I don't intend on doing laser hair removal anymore. And they say that it gets easier and less painful once you keep doing it so since I've done it the first time it should be easy going from here on out. Don't even worry about your legs. It's not that painful on your legs - unless you have hairy legs I guess. I have leg hair but it was sparse. But I think leg skin is much more stiffer so it should be less painful. Arms, definitely painful but mind over matter. I'm going to try the faster level the next time (or maybe I should just go for it and use the expert head!!!)
Future: Now I want to do my armpits BUT... I've never waxed my armpits before... and I know its going to be MAD painful... I'll let you know if I ever decide to my armpits and how that came about. I will PROBABLY do my armpits. It just depends on when I'm strong enough - mentally and physically. As for my bikini area - probably never. I've never waxed there before just shaved. I think I'd rather have professionals do it - or laser hair removal...
