Good value for a medium volume networked printer
Date of Review: May 25, 2003
The Bottom Line: The 1470N is perfect for a small office/low-volume networked printer.
We bought about 20 of these to use in lower-volume (fewer than 2000 pages per month) locations. For a networked laser printer that speaks both Postscript and PCL they are a real bargain, especially considering their 15 page-per-minute speed (although their first-page out speed is not particularly impressive).
The networking features are quite nice: you can manage from a web browser (somewhat slow) or through a proprietary Windows management interface (faster and allows managing multiple printers at once). It also has SNMP built-in.
It comes with only 8M of memory standard. It has one user-accessible 4M memory chip which can be replaced with a standard DIMM, so you don't need special printer-specific memory, which is a nice feature.
Note that if you are planning to print at higher volumes, the consumable expense becomes more of an issue: the toner has to be replaced every 6000 pages and the fuser every 20000 pages.
The main tray holds only 250 sheets, but for lower-volume use this is not really a problem. We bought one with the second paper tray, but that is rather expensive.
CAVEAT: We have been using these printers for only about 6 months so their reliability in our environment has not been established. I will update this review later when we have been using them longer.
