Burt's Bees Lip Shimmer, Champagne: Mere Alcohol Doesn't Thrill Me At All

Some months ago, I wrote a review about Burt's Bees Lip Shimmer in Nutmeg. I absolutely hated the product. It made me look like Joan Crawford in the film, Two-Faced Woman. I had these bright orange, clown lips and the finish of the product accentuated non-existent lines on my lips.

But, I also know that one thing you can count on with a Burt's Bees product is that the company doesn't have very good quality controls. I found that out the hard way too when their Beeswax Lip Balm about near to burnt my lips off, thanks to too much peppermint oil in the formulation. It appears to vary from sample to sample.

So, when I was at CVS last week, my 5 year daughter noticed the display for Burt's Bees Lip Shimmers and nicely requested a new tube of lip balm and pretty please could it be shiny and she really liked the "light pink one". Since my daughter rarely asks for anything when we go shopping, I tend to give in to her if it's a reasonable and inexpensive request. A tube of Burt's Bees Lip Shimmer in the Champagne color ended up in my bag on the way home.

Burt's Bees Lip Shimmers are presented in a non-retractable thin tube, not a thick tube as are their Lip Balms. The colors available are Champagne, Cocoa, Coffee, Guava, Merlot, Nutmeg, Papaya, Raisin, Rhubarb, Toffee and Watermelon. Be forewarned that the color of the packaging does not match the color of the product, nor what the product looks like when applied. They smell faintly of mint and strongly of wax.

After opening the tube, I applied the product to my daughter's lips. From past experience with the Nutmeg version, you really need to use a mirror when applying Lip Shimmer in order to not have shimmer or color in places other than the lip line. Knowing my daughter, without help, she'd have Lip Shimmer in her hair, on her ears, over her eyebrows and under her chin as well as on her lips.

Unlike darker versions, the product in Champagne does have a fair amount of shimmer to it. It's frosty and would look nice on those who are very fair and have cool complexions such as my daughter. It it the lightest pink and shines, making it very complimentary to her bright silver toenails (we call them "Rocket Toes") and her purple glitter fingernails with the flowers on the thumbs. I also tried the Champagne Lip Shimmer and thought it wouldn't be bad when spending a day at the pool but it's a little young for me. It does look nice for a night out, layered over a darker lip shade to add a bit of sparkle.

The Lip Shimmer in Champagne is less sparkly and much less shiny than Clinique's Glosswear for Lips and doesn't have that products terribly burnt plastic stench. It's not particularly drying or overly minty. Maybe we got a good tube or maybe Burt's Bees has worked on quality control.

The important thing to keep in mind is that you do not want to overdo it with this product or you will look positively ghastly. Should I ever have the need to costume someone as a zombie, using either this product or MAC Lipglass in Spite will work just fine.

Sunflower oil, castor oil, beeswax, candelilla wax, lanolin, cocoa seed butter, tocopheryl acetate & tocopherol (Vitamin E), peppermint oil, carnauba wax, rosemary leaf oil. May contain: Iron oxide, mica, carmine, titanium dioxide.
