Expensive non-L lens

It carries a L lens price tag and it is made of some L lens elements. Very sharp across the f/stops even wide open at 2.8... Comparable to 24-70/2.8L and 17-40/4L sharpness at the corresponding widest apreture. Focus is very fast and zoom ring is smooth.

IS on this lens is very useful especially in low light situation. This feature adds a lot of values to this lens.

The color from this lens is okay but contrast is not comparable to the L lenses.

Bokeh of this lens is not as great as I thought and 17-40/4 L actually produced a more eye pleasing bokeh comparing to this lens. It's bokeh has no comparison to my 70-200 2.8 L IS at 70/2.8..

Built quality is solid although it's not weather sealed. It felt well balanced in hand when mounted on the 30D. But still lag behind the 24-70/2.8L...

The lens comes with no hood no case... yup $1000 lens with no hood and no case.

IS on this lens is not 1/2 adjustable... only on/off

Also this lens is only a EF-S lens. That means you cannot share it with the FF camera like 5D or it will be useless if you plan to upgrade to full frame.

I like this lens...This is a reliable good lens... but it is just lacking something to make me love it...not sure what it is.. but if canon has a 24-70/2.8L IS in the future, I will sell this lens without looking back.
