I was in search for a new digital camera. mp's are of no concern to me b/c i generally keep my files small for emailing and printing 4x6 photos, however what i did want was a big screen, fast lag time and click to capture speeds, an automatic lens cover (no cap to fall off, already got 2 of that style and i find it annoying!) a long zoom, macro ability, a date stamp feature, midsize to carry with me often (not a big dslr size, but close in features and not a tiny camera that i could easily lose) and i wanted it to take good ol sd cards. i searched high and low, went to many stores to test out cameras that had all or most of the features i wanted, bought and returned several differnt ones and this is what i got.
i purchased the canon sx110is in black and really like it! its got a great 10x zoom and makes very nice crisp and vivid pictures. this camera lacks an evf if that's important for you, not me. boasts a huge 3in lcd of 230k pixels, manual controls, easy mode and auto mode, video mode with zoom, and its small enough to fit into my pants pocket. The camera feels durable and solid. a scroll wheel will allow you to view thru pics faster than clicking thru each shot. another neat feature is the playback mode. you do not have to power on the camera, just hit the arrow and you can view your shots and then it will automatically turn off or you can hit the arrow again to turn it off, this saves on time and battery power. there is a volume and sound feature, date stamp (only on postcard 2mp size though), white balance, high iso 1600, red eye reduction, image stabilization (good for not shots and long zoom), macro mode of 1cm, widescreen 16:9, face detection, motion detection, and takes HC cards.
so what's not so great is that due to the AA batteries that this camera uses, it makes the flash recycle time on the slow side, so you may miss out on some photo moments. also the flash does not automatically pop-up when needed, you must maually flip it up so this may be of annoyance to some people.
i have taken several great shots with the canon sx110 and feel this camera beats the older version sx100is with several upgrades.
in the box you get a 32mb card however that will hold like 5 pics. i upgraded and bought an extreme iii 4gb class 6 sdhc which is currently the fastest writing card available. i also purchased an accessory kit which includes 4 nimh 2500 rechargeable batteries with charger and a padded camera case that has a pocket to carry spare batteries.
great camera with a ton of great features at a pretty good price.
