Back in the days when I was photography was my living, (which were the days of film), Canon was at the leading edge of technology. Basically if you had a single lens reflex camera (SLR), you either had a Nikon or a Canon. And Canon was the one that did all kinds of cool things, like autofocus in five spots depending upon the location of your eyeball.
So that was the major reason I bought this camera - name brand. And the camera has lived up to its name - in the two years I have owned it, nothing has broken and the pictures remain sharp. I haven't put anything on photographic paper; usually I have to cut back the quality to be able to upload pictures to the internet and email things.
Another major reason I purchased this camera was for it's best feature: size. When I purchased this camera, it was the smallest 3.1 megapixel camera available. I think it still is, at least as far as brand names go. I like to climb mountains, and to do that you need light things. As digital cameras went, this one was very light.
There is one major criticism I have about this camera and that is the batteries. It does not take normal batteries: you must buy a rechargable battery from Canon. The camera comes with one, and additional batteries are available on Ebay, but still it is uncomfortable to not be able to buy batteries whenever I need them. That, and if Canon decides to stop making this model, they'll stop making the batteries, too.
Another thing I can say about batteries: make sure they are manufactured by Canon. The cheapo batteries on Ebay are made differently and do not last. I bought one that now powers my camera for about 20 pictures if I am lucky.
I would recommend this camera to somebody looking for something small. If you don't care about size, aim for something with a better zoom and better battery options.
