10.1 Megapixels sounds good but is it?

I have used the Casio EX-Z1080 digital camera for some time now. I like the feel of the camera's slightly thicker body better than other Casio cameras (which are too thin.)

The 10.1 mega pixel CCD sounds impressive, but after shooting many pictures, there really isn't much difference from Casio's less expensive 7 mega pixel cameras (or even their 5 mega pixel cameras) I suspect the reason for this is that this camera appears to use the same optics as the lower resolution cameras. Having a bigger image sensor doesn't help if you are limited by the optics. The zoom is still the same 3 times zoom as Casio's less expensive cameras.

I have issues with the battery pack, too. It does hold a decent charge, but once it dies, you are done shooting until you recharge it (not always convenient) or pop in a second (expensive) battery pack. I would much rather have a camera that used standard AA batteries since you can always find those at any local store and continue shooting.

One drawback to having a large image sensor is that each photo is larger (in memory) and takes longer to write after each shot. It also takes longer to transfer to your computer when down loading your photos. That's OK for professional quality photos, but as I mentioned above, these are at best marginally better than a 7 mega pixel photo.

It's a good camera, but Casio could have taken better advantage of the larger image sensor by improving the lens optics.
