Author's Review
We needed to replace our old grill and got this one. A lot of factors convinced us this would be great. The grill is huge, considering typical grills. It is durable and has great flexibility. The cooking surface is very large, the largest of any charcoal grill I've ever used.
Assembly was a bit more time consuming than most grills. You have to take into consideration the large size, quality, and options available. Considering this, assembly wasn't a bad experience. The manual was easy to understand, and all parts were easy to distunguish from other parts. If you have some experience with tools, nuts and bolts, you should have no problems.
I think the grill is designed around the split 55 gallon drum principle, which is a "quick and dirty" but effective principle. There are, of course a lot of advancements.
The grates are cast-iron. This is super! You MUST season the cast iron properly. Instructions are provided, which, when followed, prepare your grates for use. Ths creates a non-stick surface that will improve with use. A tool is provided for removal of the grates.
You must also NEVER use an abrasive when cleaning, otherwise the "seasoning" will be removed and more pores in the iron created, which will add to difficulty. Water and a cleaning sponge is all you should use.
I do NOT consider this a drawback. Cast iron is a superior cooking surface, and it is not their fault if people do not choose to follow simple care instructions.
Charcoal is placed into an "inner liner" as I call it. As such, the heat never comes into direct contact with the gill body. This helps protect the shell from rust out or heat damage. It also allows for easy clean up.
There is a hole and a hanger to place a "drip can" to collect grease and such as it pours out of the bottom.
A warming rack is included, which allows you to keep food warm while the rest is cooking.
All in all a superior product. If you prefer charcoal grilling, this is the ultimate. You can't do better.
The only problems I have discovered is that if left unprotected, the grill will begin to rust. The bolts will start first. Get a cover.
