Author's Review
I just recently have taken a physics class, where the main required textbook for the class was Timothy Ferris - Coming of Age in the Milky Way. When I was first informed of the book, I was sorely disappointed because of what the "normal" physics books are. To give you some understanding of my prejudiced disappointment, Coming of Age in the Milky way, is in essence, a History book. Do not get me wrong, and do not do as I nearly did, and discard the Book based on the fact that it is a "History" book. Coming of Age in the Milky Way is one of the best physics books that has been printed.
TRUTH- Timothy Ferris is one of the few authors that I know of that produces complete and utter truth for his book. Generally with books in physics, or even History, you are lead to believe things such about the past that simply weren't true. For my example, it is widely believed and taught in many places, that Columbus believed the world to be flat. However, in the time of Columbus, the world was known to be round.
CAPTIVATING- Even though it is still a History Book, Ferris has a way of making the "history" in the book seem interesting. He helps you keep wanting to read just to know how something was "created." Such as the Telescope. He describes the inventing of the Telescope in enough detail (I'm not going to give away everything, If you want to know that, read the book) that it makes more sense and it's as if Ferris is able to take you back to that time.
REALATIVE INFO - Ferris in the book, also sticks to the topic at hand. In a lot of books, the author gets sidetracked with specific "history" and by the end of the chapter, the topic is completely changed. Ferris is able to remain with one topic for that chapter, and also explain to the reader everything that is needed to know about the topic of that chapter.
CHAPTER HEADINGS - To start every chapter there is needed a chapter heading. Ferris' has the title to every chapter set specifically to encompass everything that will come about in that chapter. Also by the end of the Chapter, it is clear why he chose that title for the specific chapter.
