Author Vince Flynn has CIA operative Mitch Rapp out doing his usual business ridding the world of unsavory characters. In this book however, the tides have turned and it's his life that assassins are out to get.
This happened to be the first Vince Flynn/Mitch Rapp book I have read. I understand that the Rapp character has been around in four or five previous books. There are a number of references in this book to Rapps previous doings in earlier novels written by Flynn. Though I never did read any of them, I didn't need that background to enjoy every bit of this tale of assassins, political maneuvering, love and revenge.
Plot
Mitch Rapp has killed the son of a wealthy Saudi businessman who was a threat to the safety of the USA. The father seeks revenge and hires assassins to kill Rapp. It's known that not just any triggerman is capable of bringing down this highly skilled and well-seasoned operative of the US.
Mitch is married and his wife is expecting a child. He learns of this threat to his life but doesn't take it as seriously or perhaps close to home as it could be. His life takes on drastic changes as the assassins close in on him.
Rapp then decides to turn the tables and find those who are out to get him. It's not easy for him though. Some of his superiors are afraid he is a loose cannon and bodies will start appearing and possibly embarrass the state department and other high ranked US officials.
Rapp has a struggle on his hands as he confronts the many people involved in trying to kill him. A subplot comes into play as one of the assassins, who's gunning for Rapp, has misgivings of their past and brings in another angle that Rapp must consider.
My Thoughts
This is the first time I have been introduced to Rapp. There is little dialog. Most of his actions and that of the story are projected in the third person. Though the story grabbed me immediately it took a while for me to gather any personality from Rapp. He was distant and cold and i could not relate to him at first. Even so, the opening of this book was thrilling and a good read. The story was deep in subversive characters with diabolical plans. The later part was even better as the author brought much more emotion into Rapp and through to the reader following his up and down crisis and battles. The second part and the closing made for a solid read for me.
Before I knew it I had a copy of the previous Flynn/Rapp book in my hands. In just starting that best seller
Memorial Day I am once again turning pages at a fast rate. I have found a friend in author Vince Lynn and a protector in Mitch Rapp. I know I'll be reading a lot more from and of both men in the near future.
