by   momtonine ,   Feb 8, 2000

Pros:  great ideas, beautiful photography

Cons:  too many ads, too many detachable postcards

Overall Rating: 5/5 stars

Author's Review

I don't purchase many magazines on a regular basis but Country Home is one that I never miss. I have a stack of copies a foot high stretching back for a number of years. And the ideas that I found then are just as fresh and exciting and usable now. I buy this magazine because I am always on the lookout for ways to improve the quality of my decorating in my home. Unlike some other magazines on the market today Country Home doesn't offer me ideas that are only practical for those on an unlimited budget, and it doesn't offer me ideas that would only work in a museum setting. The photographs are always so beautifully done. So often I will wish that I could step into a picture and live there, I feel so at home with what I see. There are several regular columns in the magazine covering antiques, gardens, cooking and the latest trends in design. These are always factual and interesting.
In the February 2000 issue I particularly enjoyed the article entitled Little Big House which featured a small cottage style home filled with space stretching ideas. As the proud owner of a smaller sized home myself I found myself enthusiastic about a number of space saving suggestions that I intend to repeat in my own home.
The only drawback to the magazine that I see is the excessive amount of advertising. But this seems to be a trend across the board in magazine publishing today. There also has to be a better way to advertise the subscription service than those annoying little postcards that persist in falling out all over the place.
If you are a fan of the country or cottage style of decorating, if you are looking for beauty with practical function this magazine is for you.
