Author's Review

While pregnant with my second child, I knew I wanted something to carry the infant in while chasing around my rambunctious preschooler. I bought the expensive Baby Bjorn front carrier but you can't nurse in it.

Saw all the amazing reviews here and got the Maya. I LOVE it! Have been using it about six weeks now. The Baby Bjorn is back in the box!!! With the Maya sling I can nurse everywhere, including sitting at a restaurant table, walking in a store, standing right next to someone. I have had people want to peek in at the baby and I had to tell them I'm nursing, they didn't know it!!

Slings are great for keeping strangers' paws off your vulnerable newborn. I was amazed how many people touched the cheeks and hands of my first child when she was in her carseat carrier. With the sling, nobody touches your baby because it's virtually like reaching inside your shirt to do so!

At the store, my older child is still in the front of the cart, she didn't get displaced and doesn't even really notice the baby in the carrier. I push the cart and shop and baby sleeps the whole time nestled next to me. I take the older child to parks and zoos and everywhere, no stroller to push and no heavy car seat carrier to lug around banging into my leg.

I even wear it at restaurant tables. My husband was skeptical, he thought we could just use the car seat carrier and put it on a chair. But with the sling, when the baby started crying I just reached down and she was nursing within seconds, instead of the whole ordeal of extracting from a car seat and getting latched on less privately and all of that. He was converted!

To eat, you make sure baby is partially sitting upright inside the sling and put her over on one leg, propped against your shoulder/chest/arm. You turn your body slightly away from the table toward her direction, that way you can eat turning your head back toward the opposite shoulder slightly (toward the table) and you don't drop crumbs on the baby.

There is a pocket on the front scarf, and I keep some Purell, my keys and a credit card in there. Since I breastfeed, I don't have to carry anything, no purse or diaper bag, I can go back to the van for diaper changes.

The sling is great for home, too, if you have an older child you can't leave the baby alone with. I don't know if it's at all because of the sling but my "sling baby" is a million times easier and more content than my first.

I tried the Over the Shoulder Baby Holder too, but it was sort of ridiculous. It's very big and bulky with goofy looking padding. I would sweat in that thing no matter what the temperature. The Maya looks much better and people comment on it all the time. The Maya has metal rings, which are much safer than other slings' plastic ones. The Maya also adjusts by the front and back rails, so you can get a perfect fit. It's nice and deep and I never worry the baby could ever fall out.
