Fast small camera with wider than average lens. Low-light images very poor.

Date of Review:  Apr 18, 2005
The Bottom Line: Small, yet takes AA batteries! Wider than average lens! VGA movies! Great battery life! But low-light photos are unusually bad.
Review: I was looking for a pocket-sized digicam with a wide angle lens (28mm equivalent) for landscapes and indoor photos. I also wanted something that took standard AA batteries.

That turns out to be impossible. As of this date (January 2006)...

Good while it lasted...

Date of Review:  Dec 29, 2006
Review: ...but it lasted just a week past the expiration of the warranty. I am an infrequent camera user and research persuaded me that this one would serve the purpose well. Which it did -- briefly. Shortly after I registered the purchase, Sony sent me a...

Good while it lasted

Date of Review:  Feb 13, 2007
Review: Same as some of the previous reviews, the lens went wacky after a few months of moderate use (and it was in a case otherwise, never dropped, etc) so pictures tended to start turning out blurry, then the screen went completely white. Takes pictures...

Buy a Canon instead

Date of Review:  Nov 1, 2006
The Bottom Line: Buy a Canon instead. Sony has terrible shutter-lag, so many snapshots come out blurry; also the colors and exposure are not as good as my old Canon.
Review: No, I am not in any way affiliated with Canon, it's just that I have owned both and the Canon is a far better camera.

I bought the Sony only because I have an old Canon (A40) which is relatively heavy and bulky by today's standards and I...

Excellent entry level camera

Date of Review:  Jul 28, 2005
The Bottom Line: Despite the small display the excellent mpg movie mode and pro quality lens make this a standout camera in this class.
Review: Too often products will try and do too much and generally be mediocre at everything including it's core function. Not so with this camera. For $190 you get a compact, versatile camera with features that belie it's price.

At 4" wide by 2"...

Not too great

Date of Review:  Feb 22, 2006
Review: I bought an S40 for my wife. The first problem we had was the camera would not always turn on and sometimes not turn off. Sometimes it turned off and left the lens uncapped. We tried new batteries and it didn't help.

Then I noticed it had...

Excellent Entry-Level Digicam

Date of Review:  Mar 11, 2006
The Bottom Line: Get this camera if you're on a budget and want something easy to use.
Review: I have the privilege of using many cameras in my line of work. From entry-level cameras such as this one to digital SLR cameras and "news cameras" ($15,000+). I'll tell you from the outset that for the money this camera is smokin'!

The...

What a waste of money

Date of Review:  Mar 21, 2007
Review: I paid $270 for this, my first digital camera in July of 2005. In August of 2006 it began to have a white screen. After hitting it really hard it would go back to its normal screen. In December it began to present funny colors on the screen and take...

Sony Cyber Shot 4.1 MP, Good Price for a Good Camera

Date of Review:  Apr 10, 2007
The Bottom Line: Inexpensive, great for beginners and intermediates. Video mode was surprisingly useful, and with some standard photo tips one can capture quality shots.
Review: This camera is a relatively good buy for an everyday user. Got this as a Christmas gift and use it quite frequently. At first I wasn't so sure about the quality of pictures, however with some practice and some picture taking techniques this changed...
