Author's Review
O.K., I'm taking it back a few years. Most of the real hip-hop heads will know this one, and if you don't, you are about to get schooled on it. This gem is from 1992, in the earlier days of this dynamic duo. While many do not give full credit to the amazing DJ Premier on this album, I believe that it was an important step in his journey to where he is now. Just listen to the jazzy, horn-filled instrumental for "Ex Girl to the Next Girl" or the classic "Flip the Script", and try and tell me otherwise. And of course, let's not forget the man known as Guru. His lyrics are well-thought out, and they range in subject matter from smoking herb("Take Two and Pass") to social awareness("Conspiracy"). In addition, the self-proclaimed "king of monotone" holds true to his nickname, blessing the tracks with his smooth delivery.
Although the album has some weak links (production sometimes inconsistent, somewhat slow at times), the majority of it is very well done. If you are into your hip-hop history, check this one. If not, it's your call. Give it its chance.
